Mozilla has accused the three major browser makers—Apple, Google, and Microsoft—of sabotaging Firefox.

The company says it launched a new issue tracker where we intend to document the ways in which platforms put Firefox at a disadvantage.

@alfonsoml @strife @medina87 @stupidjim @campuscodi @jztusk There's a few scattered independent browsers (primarily Dillo, NetSurf, LadyBird, WeasyPrint, & I've got one). JavaScript support amongst these tends to be extremely weak if non-existent, which depending on what you believe the web's for...

I've got some informed if seemingly-controversial opinions here!

Managing a browser engine is quite difficult, specially getting users to change their current browser to another one, so it's understandable that there are only three main browser engines.

But there's a little known fact, there's an European company (Igalia, in fact from Galicia) that works with all of them and their works is a huge % on each one of them.
And they have their own browser engine for VR: Wolvic, inherited from Mozilla.

@medina87 @stupidjim @campuscodi @jztusk Vivaldi is just Chromium with some UI added on top.

As I said in my comment, there are currently only three major web engines: blink (chromium, Google), WebKit (safari, Apple) and Gecko (Firefox, Mozilla).

Everything else is just based on one of those. The vast majority of them, in Google's.

@medina87 @strife @campuscodi @jztusk Safari is Apple and Gnome is full of google stuff. The top menu starts with 'Me and google'.

Not a single european browser, only american ones, there's nothing 'free' in that.

@stupidjim @campuscodi your comment is accurate.

What makes Firefox better is that it's in fact the only major browser which develops their own web engine. Everything else is just Chromium reskinned. Edge? Microsoft Chrome. Opera? Chinese Chrome. Brave? Cryptobro Chrome.

What's the issue with every major browser being based on chromium? That Google singlehandedly controls the web standards. Yeah, that corporations whose profits come from violating everyone's privacy and that has already attempted to introduce various privacy invasive technologies.

And yes, Safari is also not Chromium, but it's Apple-only and while they release WebKit as open source, there are multiple reasons why no major browser is based on it.

So yeah, using Firefox is a better option if we want to avoid the web to be under Google's tyranny.
