    To my fellow #ActuallyAutistics who are also into programming. Can you handle #RegEx / #RegExp?

    Up to how much complexity?

    When I was younger, it was easy. Today, I have to use a test tool! ^_^;;

      @danie10 Yep, it's messy. Have to be extra careful when using it for mass replace.

      And then each implemention is different. It confused me before, I didn't realise it then, I thought all regex implementations were the same.

      You also have to watch out for speed. Too complex regex, or using too many regexp, can slow things. (Though no longer noticeable with today's computing power.)

      I don't know if it was good or bad we have it. I guess it depends on usage.

      @youronlyone as a non-Autistic (I think) I've always struggled with it. It just seems messy and complicated, although I realise it is powerful. I invariably use a tool like Google Bard or a website tester.

      @youronlyone @autistics @actuallyautistic I think that's a feature of aging. I could do all sorts of intellectual tasks in my twenties and thirties that I absolutely cannot do now.

      I'm pretty sure that it's true of "neurotypical" people just as much as it is of us.

      @najai @youronlyone
      That's the main thing for programming at whole for me.
      That's probably an ADHD thing too.

      I recently heard that the reason why ADHDers might game concentrated for hours, but can't focus on some homework is, because there is no direct response or reward from that piece of paper.

      For programming there is indeed. Any time you reach the next step, it's a small reward.

      @youronlyone As an autistic person, regex has always been my favorite part of programming. I approach them as fun puzzles to solve.

      @najai I know! I remember years ago, I get stuck creating the “best” regex, covering all possibilities for a given objective.

      Since computing power back then was limited, I ended up slowing down the program. LOL.

      But, now. My mind is no longer processing regex like before. I mean, I still understand it, but I have to take it slowly. I just use a tool today, so I won't spend too much time.

      @RoundSparrow I understand that, I don't like memorisation because I'm bad with it. I'm more of, the more I use it, the more I'll remember it, not because I memorised it.

      Another thing (although off-topic), the castle memory technique, usually attributed to memorisation. But, I don't know, for me, it's a storage technique. If I don't pull out a memory from its storage, I won't even remember it.

      I'm terrible at memorization and RegExp / Unix shell / Perl / Maths with x y z always gave me trouble. Far better with verbose shell like VAX/VMS and verbose programming languages and descriptive variable names.
