When Trump was first campaigning, I often noted that he seemed to believe things •because• they were coming out of his mouth. Like, this word soup just barfs out of him, and he’s as surprised as anyone, but figures it must be correct because he just said it.

And in both cases, “believes“ is really a misnomer. Belief in the sense that we usually mean it isn’t even in the picture here. Both these systems have no grounding in any kind of sense of underlying truth; there’s nothing but disconnected patterns, reinforced, repeated, and regurgitated.

@inthehands Grim. Is there any conceivable way to harness these forces for good? To use the same strategies that fuel populist demagoguery to offset or negate them? I haven't seen anything hopeful there so far.
