for ages my brain has continually looped around the standard point of how 4D chess is every normal 3D game of chess being played, but since 4am this morning when i woke up ive been realised the fact that 2D chess is the most common form of chess that most chess masters play these days online. So now im stuck trying to conceptualize what 1D chess is, and how absolutely difficult to play that would be.

So in summary 1D chess and 5D chess are where it gets difficult while 2D-4D chess is all the same degree of difficulty.

@wilbr @siege a similar argument could be made for en passant, I think.

@wilbr i fear the answer we're careening towards is "the only way to win is not to play"

@siege you could also argue that this is only because 3d and 4d chess are actually the same game as 2d chess just with aesthetic features added.

Or rather if 4d chess is 3d chess in time, then 3d chess is either 2d (standard) chess either in time or on a static physical board but not both.

Continuing the aesthetics vs game affecting function angle, 1d chess could be aesthetic colored line segments jumping around semi-randomly or a sort of linear strongly typed checkers, but is there time???

also shout out to my old internet friend Ryhn who recruited me to work together in designing and making a digital Xiàngqí (Chinese Chess) set online in Furcadia in 2001 and who then taught me how to play so they could thoroughly trounce me every day from then on.

It's still up there in perpetuity.

@Jey_snow its sort of the same but you have to then actually understand the moves as they occur with a timed clock

@siege 1 D chess is a 64 long vector that can contain lines of different lengths. Each length represents a piece, lengths ended in odd measures represent the player (white/black).
In sum, it's the same as 2D chess. Enjoy
