@thomasfuchs Not too disagree, but would new (and faster) hardware been developed of new (and more complex, sometimes more inefficient) software would not?

@thomasfuchs I just assumed the software would have to be rewritten before long because, looking at the source code, the quality of the code was so bad. Besides, there's this hot new programming language/paradigm/tool/whatever, and we should rewrite everything with THAT!

I was young and naive, and did not realize it was ALL bad code, including the hot new thing.

Still, enough people make the same mistake that we end up with partially rewritten Lava Layer code all over the place.

@thomasfuchs Yeah, I remember early visual programming on NeXT, hypercard, FoxPro, etc ... ugh, clicking around hunting for code snippets!

At least with FoxPro I could put all of the code in a separate text document, so all of the visual "snippets" would just be simplistic calls to procedures in the text document.

Not that I ever got around to refactoring the older lava layer to the same standard...

@thomasfuchs Well, really, more sophisticated software *has* taken over. We no longer worry very much about cramming an entire record onto a fixed format 80 column punched card.

@thomasfuchs back in the late 80s and 90s things were moving pretty quick in the IT space. You were in the middle of the PC revolution, green screens were being replaced, the Internet was rolling out, etc. I think the expectation was “by the time we get there, this will all be replaced”. I think it all worked out good in the end. Lots of legacy systems were modernized, businesses got productivity out of it, and the IT space made a lot of money.
