Adolf Hitler got a lot of his racist ideas from America, so it was the old USA that was the inspiration for actual Nazism...

gnutelephony (gnutelephony@floss.social)'s status on Friday, 29-Dec-2023 21:28:47 JST gnutelephony @DamienMarieAtHope indeed, and the beliefs in America were a product of Calvinism. Our poor luck that worst of that sick belief system, Dutch / English pilgrim Calvinists, clawed ashore up here, rather than just Spanish Catholic conquistadors. These Pilgrims declared themselves the "new Israelites" and went on to relive the old testament book of Joshua thru deliberate mass killing.

gnutelephony (gnutelephony@floss.social)'s status on Friday, 29-Dec-2023 21:31:11 JST gnutelephony @DamienMarieAtHope as awful as the conquistadors were in Latin America, and even though they started much earlier, too, there are many millions of native peoples alive there today. Far fewer survived the Calvinist inspired genocide in North America.

gnutelephony (gnutelephony@floss.social)'s status on Friday, 29-Dec-2023 22:08:42 JST gnutelephony @microblogc @DamienMarieAtHope I did not mean to suggest they were saints ;). But there was a key difference. The Catholic concept is that every person is open to salvation and has a soul that can be "potentially saved". Calvinists, especially the extreme ones that normalize genocide, believe only a special pre-chosen "elect" are saved by grace alone, and ultimately all others can be treated as soulless subhuman animals, lesser than them, and can be freely killed as desired.

They were somehow free from utilitarism, but that just meant instead of massively-killing natives, they put them to work until death. Yes, Spain made some humanitarian laws on natives, but Spaniards tend to make great laws they don't expect anybody to observe.
