    @alwirtes My view: defederation should be a nuclear weapon saved for virtually unmoderated servers.

    X is increasingly in the "we don't moderate anything but illegal speech" camp. Thus unmoderated for vast amounts of things violating my servers TOS.

    I'd advocate blocking them within minutes of them joining the Fedi - if they showed up with those policies still in place.

    OTOH: Any server that is even TRYING even in an uneven way - to moderate, I'd protect my folks with less "violent" tools.

      A good read…

      “The trend of decentralizing became recently popular thanks to Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover. Like Flipboard, Medium, Mozilla, Tumblr and Meta say they’ve adopted ActivityPub. My former employer stands out because it’s the sole content and discovery platform.”

      @tchambers @fediversenews

      I did not understand the importance of FlipBoard jumping onboard the Mastodon/federation scheme…starting to see the light.

      @dan613 @alwirtes But you would still only need to protect the same 8K people on your server, right? And what % would follow 1 threads user - the main way they would see Threads content (with boosts, replies or hashtags as distant 2nd, 3rd or 4th, etc)… we are planning to grow our moderation teams for sure, and may be surprised, but expect it to be very tendable.

      Look at it this way: The fedi has grown by something 300% in the last years and our moderation reports grew by like .01 percent.

      @tchambers @alwirtes I was mod for a server with about 8000 active users. I had about 3-5 reports a day. I can't imagine the work increase with even Meta Threads coming online. I suspect admins will be forced to defederate fairly quickly just to keep up.

      @gearhead @alwirtes I’d say: “The right tool for the right job” is NOT appeasement. And nuclear options are sometimes needed - but rarely. And after all else doesn’t or can’t work.

      "Defederation should be a nuclear weapon saved for (*) unmoderated servers."

      Appeasement / quasi-neutrality is no strategy.

      In the specific case of #hate speach: Recall history and in this context the lesson is crystal clear:

      Neville Chamberlain enabled Germany via the “Munich Agreement” Millions died because of such cowardice.

      IMHO - Any tolerance of intolerance is nothing less than enablement. Ask Neville.
