      @kaia@brotka.st I'm better off making a list of cars currently in production that I think are tolerable instead which saves us a lot of time:

      * MX5 ND
      * Nissan RZ34
      * GR Supra
      * GR86

      And with all of these it is implied that you get the manual gearbox version and all unneeded electronics from the interior have been removed.

      @SuperDicq I mean it would match our budget more than a modern one :blobcatgoogly: but a 20 year old car sounds like more danger of breakdowns. and we are no car people

      @kaia@brotka.st Yeah I'm a car person with my own garage so I can indeed keep my fleet of shitboxes running easily.

      I would still recommend an older car. While you might have issues it is very often a lot cheaper to get issues fixed on older cars than on newer cars, as they are often are simpler (low labor cost) and parts are generally cheaper too.

      The only thing with old cars you should really not get yourself into is things that fall outside of the realm of mechanics such as bodywork (rust and stuff).

      @kaia@brotka.st If it's things like brakes, tires, etc. it's not that expensive and new cars will need these things as well.

      @Mondobizarrro@social.xenofem.me @kaia@brotka.st I like Cuban car culture but the reason why they still maintain cars from 50s is also kinda because they are forced to because new cars just simply don't make it into the country.

      @SuperDicq @kaia older cars here will rust. Its not like it is in cuba where they can maintain cars from the 50s.

      @Mondobizarrro@social.xenofem.me @kaia@brotka.st Even with countries with rust weather it is not a guarantee that your car will rust. Lots of very simple things you can do to prevent rust but unfortunately most people do not do anything to their cars as they seem as disposable.

      @Mondobizarrro@social.xenofem.me @kaia@brotka.st You don't need a garage to store your cars in, which for a lot of people is a privilege.

      If salty road weather time all you gotta do is drive to your closest pressure wash station and take a few minutes to rinse it off...

      @SuperDicq @kaia im implying that second part when i said "making sure your car isnt caked with salt" but yeah. If family didnt help me get a car (which is a 2014 honda civic) id have probably gotten either a used honda civic from the early 00s or a used toyota corolla. If i had to pick an amerikkkan car it would prolly be an old crown vic.

      @Mondobizarrro@social.xenofem.me @kaia@brotka.st Also every car has its "common rust spots" and you just gotta take care of these.

      For my MX5 for example it's the convertible roof drain holes that often get clogged so water stays on the inside of the body panel. It's very simple to just unclog them every few months, but a lot of MX5 owners don't do this so they get rust.

      Rust is a weird one, I can't remember seeing a car with rust for 25 years here. As far as I can see, cars have not been able to rust since the mid 90s. But it is also illegal to put salt on roads here.

      If you are going to buy an older car, choose a really common model.

      The most popular used car here is Mazda 2 or Demio.

      @Mondobizarrro@social.xenofem.me @kaia@brotka.st I used to have the popup headlights one that I unfortunately crashed into a tree during ice weather a very long time ago.

      Now I have the NB version, that does not have the popup headlights but is essentially the same car with the same engine and a lot of interchangeable parts.

      Older Honda Civics were pretty decent too.

      Used:
      Honda Fit or Jazz
      Toyota Prius, Prius C or Aqua
      Mazda Axela
      Nissan X-trail
      Mazda CX 5
      Suzuk Swift
      Mazda Demio or 2

      @DazzaNZ@noagendasocial.com @kaia@brotka.st @Mondobizarrro@social.xenofem.me Honda Civic just like Toyota Corolla is a name given to a very wide range of cars and you really gotta look out which ones you buy.

      Especially with Civics there are certain models that are popular with ricers and you'll pay the rice tax.
