   Was thinking about this the other day. We are taught that the people running the Salem Witch Trials were "crazy" ( essentially )
   
   But labor was in short supply, and you didn't just kill your people for fun, at least not if you wanted to keep a society.
   
   So either the entire society was crazy, or something weird was going on up there.

     That is the case with some witch hunts but looking for patient 0 at Salem is proving difficult.
     
     In this case it actually seems like the Crucible was partially telling the truth, and that it was a bunch of catty teenage girls accusing people they didn't like of witchcraft to get them tortured/killed.

     Like most things it was actually pretty bad but not unjustified. If I recall it started with some crazy cat ladies trying to poison the water supply because they couldn't get married and then people got a little too into it.
