pH test it if you haven't already! Heavy soil is a chore (planting potatoes can break it up BTW) but what you low-effort grow is super pH dependent!

House I grew up in had very healthy soil, anything would grow in it, I just took it for granted. Now I've got a house of my own and the soil is mostly clay, good for weeds and thick grasses but not much else. I just put some native wildflowers in, hopefully they'll do okay. I'm also composting, maybe that'll help. I'm not very good at this LOL ;-)

nathanlovestrees (nathanlovestrees@disabled.social)'s status on Friday, 08-Dec-2023 03:58:06 JST nathanlovestrees Just once I'd like a book or podcast or story about people (and they're almost all white) learning to relate to the land and attending to seasonal changes that doesn't begin with, "my partner and I took a year off from our jobs and bought an old house in a secluded natural paradise untouched by humans for centuries."
Where are the stories about people struggling to relate to the land who live in the suburbs working 60 hours a week? That's what I want/need.
