     @lanodan @Rocc From what I can tell, high-roof vans are really popular for working folks. Done right, you're less likely to have stuff nicked when you're not looking and you can still hose out the back when it gets dirty.
     
     That said, a pickup truck with a canopy can do most of the same stuff.

     It's literally due to CAFE/environment regulations. Current US environmental regulations require that trucks the size of a 1990s Tacoma get over 90 mpg, or else the manufactures have to pay a pretty hefty fee per vehicle.
     
     A lot of consumers would probably even pay the passed on fee for smaller trucks, but it's easier for manufacturers to make larger vehicles that aren't classified as light trucks and are outside of those regulations. The classification is based on the wheelbase size.
