     @lewdthewides @Moon @meso @thegreatape Obviously the latter, they're scared of change and (IMO if speaking of material and social/interpersonal conditions *only*) rightfully so. Every year since 1970 has been the frog slowly boiling and now that the seams and cracks are starting to show they're having to double down on the received narrative and engage in a collective denial of reality in order to justify themselves relative to the standards they hold from a bygone era. The Democratic Party and the "moderate" Republicans have all the makings of a cargo cult now, while the radicals in the GOP serve to exploit those who have gone properly insane instead of just being wistful for the way "things used to be". And the 10% who are spared these afflictions regardless of age group are the ones who will be left to pick up the pieces when all is said and done.

Attacks on the neoliberal status quo *are* attacks on democracy in the American context because Americans by and large literally can't be trusted with anything else.
