Hey Pokemon gamers. I've never played a pokemon game. Have no idea what it's about. But thought it might be a good family game the kids could enjoy. They have a passing interest, have watched various shows a bit. And the movie about 5 times.

Would Pokemon Sword be the best place to start?

@ned What do you have in terms of old consoles and handhelds? Got a SNES or anything pre-switch?

@ned seriously?... Take them kids camping or something. Even if it's just a tent in your backyard. C'mon!

@C_J_S yeah at first I thought I would have to buy both sword and shield to have the complete game. Only just discovered they are pretty much the same game. That's brilliant marketing buy the way. You get twice as much $$$ from the whales that have just "gotta catch them all"

@ned How the pokemon games work is there are "generations" where it's the core games that came out at a particular time and satellite smaller titles.
There was usually ways to connect one gen to another but in a limited fashion.
I have only played up to gen 8, the pre-switch stuff.
I can't speak to what the switch stuff is like. I imagine I would turn my nose up at it as a crusty old 30+ yo boomer.
But, being as it's what is available now and it's easier to have on a big TV: it's probably the easiest way for the family to enjoy it together.
Also, since you didn't play it, you're not necessarily going to have any extra enthusiasm for the older titles that you want to share with your kids anyway.

One thing that has been with Pokemon games for a while is there will be varying amounts of content that gets discontinued shortly after the generation.

@ned Oh, here's a thing to know about Pokemon. I don't know if this applies to the newer ones but they do two or three kinds of remake. If you look at the titles you'll notice some are similar. They're the more normal kind of remake.

eg. Pokemon Red then some years later "Fire Red." Same game but newer device, newer graphics, some new features etc.

But then at the time they will make "Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue" where it was essentially the same game with very minor differences. Particularly a couple of pokemon appear in one version and not the other.
In theory it incentivizes kids to play with each other to get them all. More cynically it meant parents with a bit more cash probably bought both games, two game boys and a link cable for one kid.

Then the third kind is they'll do a thing like release Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver and the year after Pokemon Crystal.
Where Crystal was essentially the same as Gold and Silver but with extra content.

@ned Weird, I was just talking about this with my brother in law last week, similar situation, wondering what Pokemon to start the boy on. For us, we wanted to keep it to the original 150 (to keep it simple), but the original Gen 1 games have outdated type rules (for super effective stuff) so it might be confusing. We ended up deciding on Leaf Green or Fire Red which are basically remakes of the original games with the modern type rules and features. Undecided if we go PC EMU or handheld.

      @ned
Yeah - they have done that for years now. There are slight differences between the two games - like some unique Pokemon in each game.

IGN has a long story listing the differences
      https://www.ign.com/wikis/pokemon-sword-shield/Pokemon_Sword_and_Shield_Version_Differences_and_Exclusives

I had two boys so we would buy both anyway so they could swap between games and get more Pokemon.
