@Unixbigot @adora there are gatekeepers, recruiting firms, that often frontline job applications. They do so as cheaply as possible thru automation and most applications are simply discarded well before any human gets to see their application. What you are often then given as an engineering director are people who have mastered the recruiters selection process, not people qualified for skills you actually want.

But I’m since told that parcular company is notorious for their awful hiring process. When I hired something like 100 developers in 7 years as a head of engineering it was one interview where we just chatted. We experimented briefly with tests for ops roles (a real turn off for the candidates, and results not useful).
