My standard warning to Dr Who newbies, which I encourage @LadyDragonfly to contradict if it’s off the mark:
It’s a series that’s willing to experiment, and the tone, style, and even genre varies wildly from one episode to another — Buffy is the closest comparison I can think of — and as a result, one episode can be incredible and the next a complete dud. Some of the best & worst TV I’ve seen. So don’t get turned off by first reactions; dip your toe in multiple times.

I said “best and worst TV,” and The Armageddon Factor is an example of both: 5 episodes full of plodding, tedious hither-and-yon filler that should have been 45 minutes, but what a finale in that 6th episode! I love Tom Baker’s 10-second megalomaniac mode.

@inthehands @superball yup well said. It's a "series" in only the loosest possible conception of that term. There is no series canon that hasn't been retconned, ignored, reimagined, and rebooted about a dozen times already. Every single thing you think you know about the show is probably contradicted somewhere, by the show itself.
Number of regenerations? Just one. No, 12. No, a bit more than 12 if you count a few brief ones in between. No, actually literally thousands. No, actually it's just called rebirth and he can't do it more than once.
Name of the doctor? He doesn't have one. No, actually he does but it's a secret. No, it's not a secret, he told a few people. No, actually it's a scientific formula. No, it's just John Foreman.
The TARDIS? Special machine that he built. We mean stole. We mean built and then stole. Actually it's not a machine it's ALIVE and nobody owns it, she just likes being with the doctor.
See what I mean? Literally nothing is sacred. It's glorious.

Yeah, it's always interesting when the best and worst are in the same serial.
There are a fair number of them that could use a little shortening, too, as much as I miss the format in the modern era.
People don't tend to talk about the whole bit with the giant clam when talking about how great Genesis of the Daleks is, for example...

Yeah. There were plenty of absolutely wonderful moments in there that it gets its reputation from... but it definitely had filler.
No touching Davros's amazing monologue or the "Do I have the right?" scene, though.

Thanks, I will have to see it! Looking back through an episode list, I suspect that channel 6 in Denver (my childhood station) might never have picked up that entire season: I recognize serials from the season before and before, but none from that one.
I believe I also heard that the time war started with Genesis of the Daleks?

This one's pretty high up on his episodes. Aside from that scene, which is great, it's also where the iconic "Ace beats up a Dalek with a baseball bat" comes from, and could easily be seen as where the time war starts.
