Just updated a server I hadn’t touched in over six years from Ubuntu 16.04 → 18.04 → 20.04 → 22.04 and it all went smoothly; not a single issue.

I can’t wait for a server with Fedora Silverblue-style upgrades (CoreOS?) that’s supported by the major VPS providers in default images. Tried a while back to get Hetzner to support CoreOS but the process appears somewhat stuck:

Scratch that, spoke too soon. The final install also succeeded but now the box won’t reboot. So all was well until 20.04 and 20.04 → 22.04 borked it.

      Fun times.

Can’t even get an ssh shell in.

Meh, rebuild from scratch it is then, I guess.

      :awesome: 👍

@aral Not gonna tag them here, but some people have installed Ubuntu and had *all* of the troubles. You got the nice side of the karma stick.

Right, managed to get a diagnostic console up and it looks like the problem is a kernel panic: ‘System is deadlocked on memory’.

Appears my server had 512MB and 22.04 requires a minimum of 1GB.

      Upgrading the server now…

      🤞

🎉 Right, all good, it was the lack of memory.

So keep in mind if you’re going to update a server that has 512MB memory from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04 that 22.04 requires a minimum of 1GB to boot.

It would be a neat if, say, oh, I don’t know, if do-release-upgrade actually checked how much memory your system has and told you that before carrying out the upgrade and throwing you into a kernel panic on first boot.

@aral I’m betting USD 10 to a charity of your choice it’s either the ifupdown -> netplan.io migration, or a renamed network interface.

@gytis @aral *sigh* not even releases. Security update just bumping minor number of single package - *BAM* - all the USB cameras just stopped working.

Another "security" update - oh You were using fstab, just because systemd did not yet supported one or another flag - *BAM* - you're screwed again with unbootable system... -.-

      The list goes and goes...

@sanityinc @flyinggecko Sadly, one of the requirements for the Small Web is that servers are set up as quickly as possible. Under 30 seconds, ideally. The fastest setup I’ve found so far is on Herzner where you can get a base server for a supported OS up in roughly 3 seconds, which means I can get a Small Web place deployed in under 30. Can’t do that with a custom image.

      @sanityinc
But it is actually really easy to just use something like nixos-anywhere or nix-infect. I have a hetzner arm box with nixos running at hetzner. Also, hetzner has the nixos iso for their cloud vms. But yeah, i can understand, why one wouldn't use nixos. It has a steep learning curve.

@aral At the risk of being a bore, this is where #NixOS is great, because you can upgrade any number of release versions in a single step, and roll back if it didn't work. Admittedly it's not for everyone, and certainly not officially supported by many VPS providers.
