@grips @une the last really iconic 2hus to me were the lolk cast, probably not a coincidence since it was the last really worthwhile and charismatic game too

@une I haven't kept up with new tohos for the last 5 years so I can't even tell if it's a real character or not

@grips @allison i don't really like the gameplay (it's a pofv/podd-duel-mode-a-like) of the latest one but the new characters and story (what i could understand of it trying to struggle through the japanese) were all really good imo.
but yeah, i stopped keeping track of touhou when the lolk demo came out until this past year just cuz i started playing them again. the newer ones have grown on me

@une @grips I'm mainly a gameplaycel so 16-18 seem profoundly uninspired to me, but then, I'm actually not the biggest fan of touhou to begin with and my heart belongs more with the cave and qute schools of design (it probably isn't a coincidence that my favorite touhou fangame is phantasmagoria trues)

@allison @grips i'm not really familiar with those, what are cave and qute?
i thought hsifs had pretty good gameplay, especially on hard mode. i agree about the other two though, with maybe the exception of the final boss for UM.

@une @grips Cave was for a long time the biggest (and genre defining) developer of bullet hell games in arcades, and Qute is a small indie dev company that publishes the games made by M-KAI. Cave games can have complicated systems but the core gameplay loop is relatively traditional for lack of a better word, while M-KAI's stuff is dead simple and focuses on flow at the expense of everything else. I'm not sure what my first Cave recommendation would be for a beginner, but Eschatos is easily the best Qute game and you can't really go wrong with it especially if you already have some shmup experience going in.

@allison @grips i'm a big storycel, i mean not that touhou has the greatest story either but it's a fertile ground for the imagination i think. it's cute and comfortable

@une @grips Yeah for sure the lore is quite good, I just feel like if I'm going to enjoy the lore I'm going to enjoy it outside of the game

@une @grips Oh yeah for real, doujin communities are really promiscuous with their sharing of games. But it's not as though we don't run our own little black markets either~ ^^;

@allison @grips oh yeah i've seen that style of shmup before... i don't think i've ever played them apart from maybe like, SNES roms... might be good to branch out lol although the touhou fan community makes piracy so easy

@une @grips (most steam piracy is ridiculously easy and with mame of course it's only a matter of finding compatible roms)
