It didn't increase the cost $100. Maybe $5. Those licenses are bought in bulk and at a steep discount. Microsoft does it just to keep market share. BowserNoodle ☦️ likes this. -

@Humpleupagus @thememesniper It's the principle of the thing though. And then you get places like iBuyPower who would sell machines for pretty low markup back in the day and not put any OS on, making you pay full retail for it. ?? Humpleupagus ?? likes this. -

@Humpleupagus this was based on puget's pricing so maybe they just sell individual licenses along with the computer and don't have a deal with microsoft

At this point in time, it's very apparent that the only reason windows exists is because of oem. Without that, Microsoft would lose the front door of its business model.
I mean, I have three computers with windows 10. They were each oem windows 7 with free upgrades. Plus, with a Microsoft account, you can register the license and just tell them you changed the motherboard and stick an old license on a new computer. So the money is not in selling the os.BowserNoodle ☦️ likes this. -

Yes. Audio production is another. Most plugin and device drivers are designed for Windows or Mac. I use one cpu for that, and another for accounting since there's no accounting software on Linux that just works out of the box. My third windows cpu is just a back up in case I need windows for some reason.
Windows is shitware though. It's always a pain in the ass when I do use it. Don't even get me started on the fact it has no real package manager. It takes me hours to update all of my Audio plugins. Every developer has a different app for distribution, and I have to click "ok" 17,000 times to install each update.
It also has no native sftp in its file explorer, nor does it have sshfs. Samba is not the same.BowserNoodle ☦️ likes this. -

Aren't PC games the big reason people use Windows? ?? Humpleupagus ?? and BowserNoodle ☦️ like this.
