@randomgeek @JessTheUnstill @maddiefuzz The f…?
I was literally *just* looking up farthings / pence / shillings on Wikipedia because I have only ever used decimal currencies.
And you have put a “Carolingian” joke on my screen, and I actually know what it means now.

*shrug* You didn't need to know, I'm aware.

Jens Finkhäuser (jens@social.finkhaeuser.de)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 13:14:11 JST Jens Finkhäuser @cmdrmoto @randomgeek @JessTheUnstill @maddiefuzz Ironically, he was crowned *Roman* Emperor, i.e. of the Holy Roman Empire, which occupied much of central Europe throughout the middle ages.
Charlemagne, not Lee.
And the Holy Roman Empire got an addition later to its name "... of German nations", because that's where most of it was (TL;DR).
Now Hitler's Germany was calling itself the Third Reich, because the first was the Roman Empire, the second the Holy Roman Empire of German nations.

But he's also the topic of a metal album made by Cristopher Lee.
Who famously played Dracula.

Technological history? I can trace the heck out of those threads.
Charlemagne, wasn’t he supposed to be Tha God or something ?

Maybe you have to be German to have heard of them...
Now guess what the connection to Dracula is.

Jess👾 (jesstheunstill@infosec.exchange)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 13:14:17 JST Jess👾 I'd heard of Charlemagne, but it'd been a long time, and I didn't remember the broader context of his empire (or even that it was called the Carolingian empire). Most of my European History courses only really started at the end of the middle ages. So it was a fun history rabbit hole to drill down and learn something new when I learned about an Empire in Europe that I'd never really known about before!
