@FourOh-LLC @Herbst We've been mutuals for a while, and never once do I recall animosity. Your attack on Poast was unnecessary and in bad form. You might not like the culture that large instances being to fedi, and maybe your concerns about concentration have merit, but that's no excuse to be a dick. Graf isn't asking you to donate to his instance; he's asking people to donate to their home one. Graf and Alex are two of the biggest proponents of people self-hosting, and I've seen graf help all kinds of people with setting up their own instance. He actually encourages it for the robustness of the fediverse. I think you owe him an apology.

@FourOh-LLC @Herbst At some point, someone allowed you to use their server, yes? You aren't self-hosting, correct? If you were, money would change hands through the usual methods. Economy of scale suggests smaller instances of 100 or less active users are probably the cheapest way to run things, since fixed costs and all that are a thing. If your server suddenly asked you to donate— asked, not mandated— would you feel offended? I find the idea of balking at the mere idea of asking for donations for a community funded project very odd. Graf puts hundreds, probably thousands, a month out of his own pocket for this, and the volume of people on this side of the fediverse is in no small part because of his project.

Doesn't have to, I've never donated directly (I did use the VPN service promo code that helps somehow because I needed one and it was a great deal). I'll still boost the donation calls because I love this place, even if I am a poorfag and can't contribute regularly.

I'd read literally, this response could suggest you're very pro-poast. 😏
A lot of people find it a waste of time to explain things they feel should be obvious. If you don't like people calling you variants of "niggerfaggot", you could always block them or move to another instance walled off from people who enjoy the freedoms that the internet used to allow before it became a sanitized corporate husk. And I don't mean that as a demand for you to leave if you don't like it, but it is a reality. You can domain block at the account level, mute or block selectively, or ask your admin if there's a better way. The fact remains that a lot of people look for the biggest instance and sign up there before eventually self hosting or migrating elsewhere. If all that existed were sanitized soulless mastodon instances, fediverse would suck and be no different from a Twitter/reddit clone. It's better BECAUSE you have a choice, as do all users.

There are people like Jeff Cliff, PBUH, that continue to have good faith discussions despite being called names or having their words twisted regularly. It's part of Internet culture to "shitpost" like this. You may not like it, but that doesn't make it invalid. The "trolling" culture is as old as the internet itself.

As much as I hate paying taxes, I appreciate that I have a low chance of being mugged by bandits on my way to the market as I take muh roads. Unless you're self hosting using your neighbor's stolen wifi to setup your server (based if so), you're paying for or using a service someone else paid to setup.
