Untrue things people assume on me when I say my country has a right to defend my family and friends after nearly dying in a horrific massacre: 5) That I know my culture and history less than people who never even visited 6) That I don't know what the word occupation means while they think my country is still occupying Gaza and often don't even know where the West Bank is 7) That I don't know what the word genocide means (while it is being used in horrifically false ways)
@aral@LALegault Hi Aral. I appreciate you. I'm Israeli. Would you like to have a call to learn from someone who lives through it instead of Jewish people who never even visited and somehow think they have the right to speak from personal experience as if they know what it's like to live in the middle east? I'd be happy to have a call with you, especially if you then let your community know more about it.
@skaly@LALegault Hi. Thanks for reaching out but I’m not sure what you could tell me that would make me go “Ah, now that you mention it, yes, I hope Bibi keeps bombing the shit out of Gaza because, on further thought, 8,000 dead Palestinians, almost half of them children, is nowhere near enough.” Sorry, no.
Also: Raz Segal is an associate professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Stockton University and the endowed professor in the study of modern genocide.
I empathise with the suffering on both sides. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain of the indefensible inhumanity inflicted by Hamas on Oct 7. But I equally do not need to have my mind changed about the unconscionable human catastrophe being perpetrated by Israel in Gaza as we speak.
@aral@LALegault Aral, you are taking this information from Hamas. I thought you would have the basic respect to speak to someone from within. I was wrong. The offer is still on the table. Sending love, and hope for peace.
@MiriShuli@skaly You have a very warped understanding of history, Miriam. I have no desire to engage with someone who is clearly suggesting the Palestinian people should be ethnically cleansed.
@aral@skaly Well, that’s some serious bullshit Aral. No one, not even Bibi, is advocating what you present here.
I will explain one thing that many seem incapable of understanding. Israel has lived with terrorists within their own borders for decades. They’ve tolerated suicide bombers on buses, schools, diners. On Oct 7th something snapped. Never again will Israel allow terrorists to live within their borders. Egypt & Qatar should get the civilians out.
@skaly You know what, I would if I believed you were engaging in good faith. Your initial offer to try and change my mind on whether or not what we’re seeing in Gaza is a genocide or not (by making the argument that only an Israeli living there can legitimately decide whether it is or not) and then following up with a public post tagging me in some sort of effort to shame me to your followers does not make me think that. So, no, sorry. I wish you well but I’m done here.
@aral Dear Aral, I am asking again, let's have a call. You can record me if you want, if it helps anything. I think you'll be able to understand me better this way, I hope you respect me enough to do so.
