   Something I miss since moving to the city: basic suburban fish and chip shops.

   I can get a fancy expensive plate of fish & chips at a restaurant, with a side salad and a lemon wedge and a little dish of tartare sauce.

   But I just want the kind that comes wrapped in paper with a piece of flake and a couple of South Melbourne dim sims and some potato cakes.

   According to google maps, there is no such place within 2 km of me. 😭

     I actually don't mind oven-baked fish & chips from the freezer as a low-effort substitute.

     But I haven't been able to get the oven working in this flat yet.

     I probably should ask about it at the inspection next week.

     The digital clock on the oven works. It just doesn't get hot for any combination of knob twiddling that I've tried.

     @lookitmychicken oh dear. Definitely get that looked at. (And make sure it's plugged in and the breaker's not tripped.)

     We don't have mushy peas in Australia, but I lived in London for 3 years, so I remember the strange mushy peas. I think I tried them ... once?? It's probably one of those things you have to grow up with to love.

     Oh, I think there's 'eel liquor' in them, maybe? Cos my dad has a life-threatening fish allergy, and I think I remember him having a bad reaction to mushy peas.

     @lookitmychicken I really, really miss fish and chips here in Switzerland. The other day I went past a "pub" (you don't see those here either, it was either a bar or a restaurant) with a sign outside that said, "Best Fish & Chips in Lucerne!" I was tempted for about 5 seconds... until I saw the next line, "Served with Pea Purée," and just about chucked myself into the river.

     (In case you don't have it in Australia: it's MUSHY PEAS. Pea purée is just not. a. thing.)
