I actually like the term enshittification, but I can see why it's already overused. The big reason it's become a catch-all is because those on the left needed a way to explain public-private partnerships making everything worse because mos people would retort with it not really being capitalism anymore.
A broad definition I would propose for enshittification is the inevitable decline of a product or institution that becomes more interested in perpetuating itself than fulfilling it's purpose.

My theory is that human interaction only scales up by so much and then it just sort of breaks down into a huge clusterfuck of anger and confusion. Our brains just weren't wired for this sort of low-latency psychic connection with the rest of humanity that the internet provides. -

@gabriel @caekislove @leyonhjelm @allison I like "a particular VC company failure mode that keeps happening and the degradation of the service as a result." VCs dump money on a company based on the idea that they capture an audience and then can work out a business model later. The problem is that the service starts free and nobody ever want to transition to paid, that will just fail, so they inevitably switch to ad-driven. This ruins the experience, and the money starts drying up so they keep degrading the functionality of the service, which just accelerates the downward spiral. It happens over and over again, it's common and predictable and worth noting as a phenomenon. I can't remember Doctorow's original wording but I think it was close to this. -
