BBC Article on Danny Boyle's soon to come out The Matrix: The Musical!

"When he watched The Matrix when it came out in 1999, (Danny) Boyle admits some of its themes went over his head.

"I loved it," he says. "I was a bit baffled, to be honest, and it's kind of swum into view - it's got clearer and clearer in the 20-odd years since it came out.

"You think, 'Oh my God, it's quite accurate, really, what it's talking about.'""

Oh boy, cant wait to scroll down and read how much he doesnt get the movie.

      Matrix! The Musical:
Have you ever thought maybe like you know we're already in the Matrix? Look around you man, open your eyes, are we in charge of technology or is technology in charge of us?!

the first bit where they literally quote Wachowski laying out what her film is about, i was like oh shit wait Mr Boyle is actually going to make a giant theatre show about the transgender experience loosely wrapped in a sci fi metaphor?

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of my favourite films.

Frankenstein is probably the most expensive theatre show ive seen that i disliked.

This all feels too on the nose that a cis guys making a matrix show and thinks its actually even remotely about AI.

Danny its about coming out as Transgender and how people breaking that gender boundary gives rise to Fascism because of society's need for comfort outweighing the value of trans life.

@siege imagining Danny Boyle opening his mailbox and he just has like sixty postcards that say "Danny. It's about being transgender" in different peoples' handwriting

@taber yeah like he gives a bit of basic 101 lip service where hes says a bit about how non-binary the casting was trying to be. Which kinda feels like he watched a top 10 things you didnt know about The Matrix on youtube.

Its not about how AI is taking over or how robots are going to stuff humans into a simulated reality, or that we might already be in a simulated reality.

Its just about how trans people go through intense trauma from divorcement from their internal needs that the brains response is to dissociate from the world so nothing feels real and pretransition they will literally take part in simulating a reality that doesnt feel right but they wont understand why until they realise they're trans and stop simulating being a different person entirely.

@siege I don't think they ever cited it as a reference, but I think it's interesting that both The Matrix and Turing's Imitation Game use machines as a metaphor for whether someone can pass according to societal norms. Of course, the stakes for him were unfortunately higher. I'd like to think a fully aware retelling would honour that connection.

@craignicol yeah, i mean one of the key signs of someone maybe being trans is them saying they think they might actually be a robot or an alien.

Also to spoil the ending, Boyle's Frankenstein ends with Doctor Frankenstein giving a long monologue and to the audience while the music slowly builds to an emotional crescendo, and then a huge door opens at the back of the stage and snow blows through from the piercing white light beyond (where the monster will chase Frankenstein as in the ending of the book) and the doctor turns and theatrically leaves and the music is pounding and then the door slams shut behind him and the bass booms through the audience in darkness. And then everyone feels compelled to stand up and applaud because they were just manipulated like Reality Tv does with footage.

Matrix!: The Hip Hopera will do the same thing but after his monologue Neo will fly upwards to the bright light above as feathers or some other thing falls down.

@aris_tgd it was a very good audience manipulation ending, like the show was so long and drivelly but the ending overwrote everything and forced you to feel due to the bass vibrating through your bones and then it all echoing out as youre left in the darkness, you didnt care what Frankenstein just said but you felt moved so it must have been a good show.

@siege it's a testament to the power of that ending that I have a photographic memory and saw the show twice in theaters and didn't remember that was how it ended until you told me.

@siege see I don’t even remember that part, I got stuck on the ‘monster revives the Dr by pouring wine all over his face’ and how much fuel that would be for an acting feud lol
