@djsundog and I are launching a project to build federated, open source, #bandcamp alternative.

We're building this because we need it. We're doing it ourselves because it will become a part of the larger media production and distribution ecosystem we have planned.

We welcome other open source projects, and we might even contribute to a few of them, but for the next several months, this is our full time gig.

    Long term vision: https://mountaintown.technology/

    Repo: https://code.communitymedia.network/sundog/aural_isle

    How and why: https://ajroach42.com/the-uncertain-future-of-bandcamp/

      The Uncertain Future of Bandcamp
      from ~ajroach42.com
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you probably already know that I run a record label. If you haven’t, now you know I run a record label. It’s called Analog Revolution, and we do the bulk of our sales through our website (and our cassette subcription platform), but we have also been, for the last ten years, big fans of and users of Bandcamp. It was recently announced that Bandcamp was being sold (again) and this time, they’re laying off half the staff. This is almost certainly in response to Bandcamp’s efforts to unionize (see the bandcamp union’s response to the layoffs on instagram) and it leaves folks like me in a curious position. So, let’s talk about the future of music distribution in a world where the future of bandcamp is uncertain.

Songtradr fired half the staff at bandcamp, and that signals a dark future for bandcamp as a company.

So we're going to do something about it:

If you're interested in helping, great! We are definitely looking for collaborators to work with us, and are currently holding discussions about the project in one of our matrix channels - reach out to me via DM if you'd like to get access.

If you'd like to support us, also great! We'll be setting up an OpenCollective project shortly to ensure transparency and provide a way for us to pay contributors along the way.

Prior to that, feel free to back my Patreon if you're insistent in getting financial support sent our way.

@gcrkrause hey Georg, I'd love for our projects to be able to communicate, that's a big part of why we're approaching things the way we have.

I'm just the devops/infra guy. You'll want to talk to sundog when it comes time to interop.

We're aiming for a non-federated proof of concept build in the very short term, and to build federation in when thats done.

Seems like getting together sometime after the initial release makes sense?

@ajroach42 Hi, I am Maintainer at Funkwhale and considering the history with another project I want to ask you to collaborate with us in terms of the ActivityPub Vocabulary, so it will be interoperable. Would be sad to have another tool that's unable to speak with existing instances.

Besides this, good luck and have fun!

@gcrkrause also, thank you for being kind. So many people have responded with some variation on "why bother" or have just assumed that we are already doing it wrong. It makes me sad to see.

@ajroach42 @djsundog If you want an already-existing really nice (IMO) media encoding and tagging pipeline, you are more than welcome to make use of Bandcrash for that! https://github.com/fluffy-critter/bandcrash

Right now the docs are all focused around the CLI, but I'm working on a standalone desktop GUI right now, and it's 100% ready to be used as the backend on an encoding server as well.

@ajroach42 @djsundog I love the idea, hope you’re in touch with @bandcampunited And cooperatively-owned is the way to go. Otherwise it seems like the same extractive model with extra steps. Best of luck! I’ll be following!

@loshmi @djsundog when there's actually a flagship instance, it will probably be cooperatively managed.

There's no real money involved yet. We'll figure out the specifics of our legal structure when there's money in play.

      @loshmi @djsundog @bandcampunited

There are plenty of unethical ways to run a co-op and plenty of ethical ways to run something without cooperative ownership.

It's likely that I won't be involved in the ownership or operation of any big instances. I'd prefer to see lots of small ones, it works better that way.

But sure, if there has to be a big instance, it'd be better if it was operated fairly and transparently.

I have been in touch with some current and former bandcamp employees, but I haven't reached out to the union yet, as I figured they had enough on their plates already.

@luka @djsundog I think we'll probably be able to avoid getting fossbro-y. They tend to drop off when you start tossing around phrases like "public good" and "equitable" and the idea of building an equitable platform to support the public good is pretty close to the heart of what we're doing.

We got, honestly, way more attention than I expected, way sooner than I expected it.

Today or tomorrow, I'll add our code of conduct and the other governance documents that an open source project needs to demonstrate their values.

      I'm glad you're excited. I am too.

@ajroach42 @djsundog i must thank you for starting this! I've been thinking dreaming pushing for this idea since the sell of bc to Epic. I'm rooting for it and all. I very much hope you will manage to establish a healthy and open dev team/community that will not go down the classic flossbro road of misogyny and social insensitivity.

@ajroach42 @djsundog it just happens I'm also recently out of a job. I need a bit of downtime but I this is something that I'd love to be involved with.

Also I think, being based in .eu I might be a good vehicle through which we could apply for an ngi zero grant, to help bootstrap this.
