⚠ Meta will apparently to move to a "Pay for your Rights" model in the European Union!

EU users would then have to pay $ 168 a year if they don't want to give up their fundamental right to privacy on Facebook and Instagram. This move is inacceptable.

@RLetot @noybeu So what exactly are you complaining about now?

They were making money in a way that’s now illegal, and they’re looking for another way that’s legal - what’s the problem?

The “money or data” method is indeed illegal, but currently it’s “will apparently”, so we don’t yet know the details.

Given Meta’s size, they’ll find a way eventually.

@breizh you're framing that into an either/or proposition. But it's not.

I'm actually not asking Meta to provide anything. I just want them to comply to existing legislation. The business model to do so is up to them, not me. @noybeu

@RLetot @noybeu I mean, you’re not asking Meta to provide these services at a loss, are you? Since that would be both ridiculous and impossible (they may have a lot of cash, but it’s not infinite).

Someone has to fund the infrastructure. If it’s not the advertisers, it’ll be the users (maybe the infrastructure could cost less than that, but that’s another point).

@RLetot @noybeu Well, the ideal solution in this situation is to make payment mandatory, and not using personal data at all anymore, right?

@breizh way better ? Maybe. Like crossing a small town at 200km/h is way better than doing so at 220km/h. It's « way better » (actually just a bit less bad), but still unacceptable. @noybeu

@RLetot @noybeu I understand it the other way round. The service now costs $168/year. You have the option of selling your data for the same fee to achieve a zero net profit.

Maybe that option is illegal, in which case, and this is what I was saying at the beginning, the real solution is for the service to cost $168/year and you have to pay for it, without any other option.

@breizh what do you not understand in « EU users would then have to pay $ 168 a year if they don't want to give up their fundamental right to privacy on Facebook and Instagram » ? The service is there and free, the payment is just to conserve your rights. @noybeu

@RLetot @noybeu Well, you don’t pay to conserve your rights, you pay for a service. The truth is, Facebook and Instagram should always have been paid services.

(and technically they were, it’s just that you weren’t the one paying for it)

@breizh I'm not complaining. Just saying that having to pay to conserve fundamental rights is not « way better » than having those right ignored. It's just a bit less bad, and still unacceptable. @noybeu

@recker5 @RLetot @noybeu We have enough voluntary sysadmins for 10 millions, but not for 10 billions.

Maybe that with more donators we’ll can hire some sysadmin, but that’s a hard guess.

And the current users of the Fediverse are probably more willingly to donate (the current Fediverse public really isn’t representative of the global population).

      >Or not : the Fedi is paid too.

True. But nobody needs to satisfy the money hunger of shareholders. And anybody can offer it for free if he feels like.

      > It works now, but you can’t really scale up.

I doubt that. If you can serve 10 million users by their donations, why shouldn't it work with 10 billion users?

      What's the difference?

It's exactly the same as a paywall for newspapers.

You want to be part of a soc media platform with gazillion users?
Want it for free? Give us you data!
Dont want to give anything? Then pay!

This is actually the best thing that can happen to the Fedi.

@recker5 @RLetot @noybeu Or not : the Fedi is paid too. By donations, mainly (even if it’s the admin that pay from their own pockets, then they it’s like they’re donating). It works now, but you can’t really scale up.
