I took my son to the arcade last night. Arcade gaming is objectively worse than it was 30 years ago. The graphics are worse, the controllers are worse, the gameplay is worse.

Streetfighter II, Tekken, Daytona, Sega Rally, Time Crisis, Point Blank, etc. That was the pinnacle of arcade games.

How the hell did personal gaming get so much better while arcade gaming goes backwards?

@kamehamic Yeah, but why haven't those things filtered back into arcades? Why do they still have games with PS1 quality graphics?

Because it's more affordable (at least in the long run), plus all those games have been ported... also we have "free" games now, 30 years ago was the "beginning" of video gaming, not the big industry it's now. Throw internet into the mix...
I guess what I'm trying to say is things have changed a LOT.

I'm not up to speed on what's in the arcades now, are the games recent? for reference the most recent stuff I remember in arcades are the DDR machines.

@ned Nintendo killed the arcade. You could play multiple games..
Same for PC and you didn't have to leave home.

You could play adventure and rpg formats and story driven games. Not just racing and shooters.

      Plus practicality

@PakkonenCT Yeah but why do they still have Daytona USA with 90's grade vector graphics at the arcade, and not Gran Turismo 7?

Arcade would probably cost you at least a quarter million to set up and assuming you're keeping pace you're probably dropping that again every five years.
How many people were there putting money into the machines? Would you invest in one?

@C_J_S Presumably you would sell old stock to bring in new stock. Sure you're not going to make all the money back, but some. But even then, you should be able to take an old driving sim, update the software, and reuse. But that doesn't seem to be happening.
