    As you might have noticed earlier today, I accidentally reset the poll from yesterday 😳

    So, here's a warning for poll creators:

    If you edit a Mastodon poll, changing the options at all will reset the poll to zero, even if people have already voted on it. It will do this automatically without warning, so only edit options if you're okay with resetting the poll.

    If you want more advice on creating polls on Mastodon, see here:

      @ke7zum

      I think it's just to stop "bait and switch" abuse of polls, but there ought to be a warning as it's not at all obvious.

      It's also not consistent either, because you can edit the main part of the post without resetting the poll.

      @feditips good to know, thanks. I think I did this without realising it got reset. I wonder if this is a bug?

      p.s. It makes sense that the poll would reset in order to prevent abuse, but the problem here is the lack of warning and the inconsistency.

      You can edit the main part of the post without resetting its poll, which gives the impression that editing doesn't reset anything. The reset only happens if you change the poll options themselves.

      It would be nice if Mastodon had a confirmation dialogue box ("This will reset your poll, are you sure?") if you try to edit the labels.

      @dansup @feditips @Gargron It can be argued that you should be able to edit a poll and keep the voting data, although this can create some other tricky issues.

      Here's the argument:

      Let's suppose you've made a typo or an oversight, but you don't want to now go back and collect the votes you've already gathered (because even here, without the algorithm driven timeline, people keep it moving). What do you do then? Creating a new poll for this seems a bit much.
