But they're going to do downhill from where they were by underestimating how great it can be to have students already using your product and so pushing adoption in corporations. -

It's going to be a slow burn of what they had over their competitors. -

sure, most of those *can* afford it, but why the fuck would you want to build your company and livelihood on unity engine games when they’re willing to pull shit like this?
at least with unreal engine each specific version is immutable. got a license and agreed to the EULA for UE4.17 or whatever? the terms for that version will never change, you can just use it forever
meanwhile every dev who had a unity game in production is completely fucked in comparison

5% of 10 bucks being 0.50 -

Unity seems much worse, specially as I guess even for corporate clients they're not going to tell how they count that bullshit, which business wise just doesn't works. -

what if you give your game away on steam or w/e and 100k people download it out of the blue?
what happens if pirated copies still get registered as installs by unitys telemetry bullshit?

joshie 🏳️🌈 (6a62@raru.re)'s status on Thursday, 14-Sep-2023 18:02:32 JST joshie 🏳️🌈 @lanodan @katka @ocean i believe unity is backtracking on some of their bullshit, but worth pointing out they were proposing 20cents *per install*
customer puts it on their desktop and their steam deck? that just doubled. let their friend access through family share and they also installed it? whoops now it’s up to 60cents etc etc.
and sales are easy for engine folks to track at least. installs? not so much. the whole thing raises so much uncertainty. I reckon 90% of corps would rather pay a little more for that certainty of “i know exactly how much of a cut my engine provider is taking” at the end of the day

oshy (ocean@raru.re)'s status on Thursday, 14-Sep-2023 18:11:17 JST oshy @6a62 @lanodan @katka A ton of Unity games are also mobile games where you install for free and then pay inside the app later
Tons of people download those and then never pay, the devs are just on the hook for that

joshie 🏳️🌈 (6a62@raru.re)'s status on Thursday, 14-Sep-2023 18:18:52 JST joshie 🏳️🌈 @lanodan @katka @ocean fractions of a cent usually
for successful mobile games the number i’ve heard is that it averages out to around 60cents per user (between ads and micro transactions). so if unity is taking a 20cent cut, suddenly that’s 33% gone huh
so yeah, I doubt mobile game devs are too happy either
