Great, even more different cables that use USB-C style connectors on both ends and are indistinguishable from other such cables cables, but if you don't have the right cable stuff just won't work https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/newsroom/news/intel-introduces-thunderbolt-5-standard.html

Preskton ?⚡? (esk@hachyderm.io)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Sep-2023 23:55:58 JST Preskton ?⚡? @thomasfuchs this has been my favorite part about usb-c. ostensibly interchangeable, yet there are so many variations for power/data/video, and stuff just doesn't work if you grab the wrong cable.

Didn't realize at first it was actually DisplayPort-protocol-over-USB-C ... and that all my other usb-c cables were not compatible.

Still better than barrel jacks anyway.

Even with conforming cables, because they usually contain active ICs, those ICs can fail and but relatively high power where it shouldn't go.

Can't wait to have a "chipped, but lol not really" cable weld itself into my laptop.
