@thomasfuchs this has been my favorite part about usb-c. ostensibly interchangeable, yet there are so many variations for power/data/video, and stuff just doesn't work if you grab the wrong cable.

@thomasfuchs yeah, this is annoying. Had this problem with my second monitor that uses a usb-c style cable. Didn't realize at first it was actually DisplayPort-protocol-over-USB-C ... and that all my other usb-c cables were not compatible.

@thomasfuchs Well, with that "passive cables up to 1 meter" you'll know that anything lower than a meter isn't Thunderbolt 5....

@thomasfuchs But at least they refuse to work instead of exploding (if everything is spec conformant), and the higher speed cables and higher power USB power delivery sources generally work with things needing lower speeds or power.

Still better than barrel jacks anyway.

@ids1024 @thomasfuchs did you know that the higher power delivery connectors need to have special platings and contact geometry to suppress arcing?

Can't wait to have a "chipped, but lol not really" cable weld itself into my laptop.
