It's so insane to me that the only way to do push notifications on Android is to link whatever server is producing your actual push notifications to a Google Firebase middleman that will receive the notifications and republish them and then you have to put a special manifest file in your Android app that tells Google that your app is listening to that certain Firebase a middleman — as in, you don't even listen to that Firebase middleman yourself in any piece of code anywhere in your app, the operating system it completely handles it for you. IT is what listens for those push notifications and wakes your app up to deal with them. Which is why you can't just directly use whatever server is producing its own push notifications (which it would have to be to make the Firebase push notification middleman work anyway), because at no point do you actually have control over how you subscribe to push notifications in your code, and Android only supports Firebase.

And of course, even though there is a widespread and well-known push notifications standard that web push notifications use, so even if Google didn't want you to handle listening for notifications in your own code for maybe OS scheduler optimization reasons they could still make it so that you could tether your app to any server that produces pushed notifications as long as they follow that standard, they limit it to only working with Firebase.

And the kicker is that theoretically you could just set up a long running background process for your application that survives reboots and closing the app and stuff and it could just sit in the background and listen to push notifications or a websocket or whatever, like on Linux or old Android, but Android has made the OS increasingly hostile to that in the interest of battery life and performance optimization to try to keep up with Apple. There's still technically a way to do it and that's what I plan to do — I plan to massively abuse the multi-threaded asynchronous foreground worker system — but this is a really atrocious.

To clarify though: Firebase Cloud Messaging does NOT get ANY of the content of these notifications, it's end to end encrypted. But still.

And before all you Apple fanbois and fangirls get all hot and bothered about how Apple has better privacy (lmfao), it doesn't. You have the exact same setup on Apple iOS, except it's called APNs (Apple Push Notification service) instead of FCM.

"The delivery of remote notifications involves several key components:

Your company’s server, known as the provider server

      Apple Push Notification service (APNs)

      The user’s device

Your app running on the user’s device"

Also, Apple collects just as much *if not more* data about you than Google does — including storing all your iMessages in plaintext in iCloud and scanning them. They just don't share that data with third parties — but considering they're actively looking to get into the advertisement selling game themselves according to the NYT, that makes fuck all difference.

Pretty sure I've seen self-hosted alternative services for this same purpose, but never tangled with that so no idea how they compare

@anarchopunk_girl Apple sells tech for idiots, I've said it once and I'll say it until it stops being true which is never. Their only claim to "PrIvAcY aNd sEcUrItY" is the fact that all their software is its own hyper-exclusive ecosystem, which basically means fuck-all since that ecosystem has barely any actual security features.

HOLY SHIT okay it looks like there IS a free and open source alternative to Firebase Cloud Messaging and Google Play Services to receive and distribute those push notifications: https://unifiedpush.org/

It looks really awesome, so I'm *definitely* going to try to use this in my app!

@Mayobrot yes it does, there is *no other official mechanism* for notification delivery on Android

Ah so that's why notifications kind of suck on Google-less Android lol. I figured it was something like that. Do you know if that applies to SMS as well?

Also, you can't get around this using a FLOSS alternative like UnifiedPush or a background polling/listening process on iOS either, because iOS *literally doesn't allow you to run background processes at all*, in the interest of battery life, not even Android's limited selection of capabilities, so yeah.

I can't really tell if the notifications I'm now getting from Tusky are coming from ntfy or not tho.... Hmm. Also, there's no way I'm going to be able to get ntfy/UnifiedPush to work for my app, since my app has to be able to work with arbitrary Revolt instances and Revolt itself does not support UnifiedPush so even if I make an instance that does, people would only be able to use my instance. :/

@housepanther I only use Android, so that's perfectly fine — my question is, I find Tusky incredibly good looking and amazing and I have zero pain points with it, so what's the sell on Moshidon?

@anarchopunk_girl I haven't used Tusky in quite some time. I switched from it to Moshidon. Have you checked out Moshidon? I know it is for Android but I'm unsure if it is available for Apple.

Back to https://robertohuertas.com/2019/06/29/android_foreground_services/ for my app I guess! NGL, getting this working is a kind of exciting idea. If only I wasn't completely incapacitated today and should be resting

@Mayobrot I mean, there is UnifiedPush and ntfy, which does exactly that actually (posted about it in the parent thread), it's really amazingly cool and surprisingly sustainable. The issue is getting whatever site or service you wanna get notifications for to support/communicate with whatever push server you want to use, lile ntfy. It's that way because of the inherent requirements and challenges of efficiently doing push notifications I suppose.

Wow this is kind of fucked up. I suppose an Android distro could just change that, but then they'd also have to maintain their own notification service for all of their users because no apps do it themselves because of this.
