Pope Francis's tenure as Pope has consequently caused both the largely progressive German church to threaten a schism over his conservative approach to gay marriage (if a bishop or priest officiates a gay marriage they will be immediately defrocked) while simultaneously causing the threat of a schism among parts of the US Catholic Church over his progressive policies of basically trying to eliminate every word of Latin from the masses and cracking down on every other remotely conservative aspect left within the church. Basically he's that meme of the dude agonizing over which of two buttons to push, only he's pressing both buttons and wondering why nothing is working as expected.
His problem, as far as I'm concerned is not that he's too progressive or whatever, its that he can't seem to make up his mind on which stance to take on any given matter.

@Shadowman311 Pope Francis has a weird issue with optics. I swear he uses the controversy his cherry picked quotations generate as PR to get people interested in the church. The militant leity are quick to :Ackshually: in defense of real church doctrine, but I guarantee he's accidentally (or purposefully?) helped lead several people to salvation through the media quotemining him. -

Is religion real? Or is it just a cultural touchstone? Does truth matter at all? If not you should just change the region to address or fit in with the social climate of the time. It's just an ideology used to control the masses through tradition and culture. But if truth does matter than any changes to doctrine MUST be fully considered before implementation, lest you stray from truth and legitimize your religion. If your religion is true must shape society to fit your religion or move your religion and society away from truth.
