🤔The owner of Twitter is mad that Latham & Watkins is doing pro bono work? Because pro bono means working for free? But... I thought he liked not paying lawyers?

The extra cruelty that SF shows to homeless people is why NYC people are kinder. "NYC people are mean!" is a lie.

NYC has a *higher* homeless rate than SF. But because Wall Street finance bros are less cruel than SF tech bros, fewer than 5% of NYC's homeless are unsheltered. SF is over 50%. 🤦🏿♂️

@mekkaokereke uh, Minneapolis is pretty bad in the cruelty department. We even had a court case on the legality of destroying homeless folks belongings when the city has no shelter beds available. When it became clear the city was going to lose that case, they went through and did a huge sweep of all of the encampments just before the judge ruled against them.

(And a few months later, resumed the sweeps in defiance of the judge’s order)

SF is not unique in our homeless rate. Many other cities have more homeless people, both absolute number, and per capita.

SF is not unique in our opioid crisis. Many other cities have more people with addiction, both absolute number, and per capita.

SF is unique in the cruelty and racism with which we approach social issues. We are very bad at this.

Because we listen to dudes whose judgement says "Crypto is good!" And "Musk will be great for Twitter!" And "SPAC!"

If I did this to you a few times a year it would break your spirit. And you are rich, housed, and without a substance abuse problem or severe mental health issues! Imagine the impact that this would have if you were unhoused!

I don't like seeing tents on the street. I don't like seeing human feces and trash on the street. I don't like seeing needles on the street. It's unsanitary, a public health nuisance, and just gross.

But there are more effective solutions.♥️👍🏿

A "sweep" to clean up homeless encampments throws away people's stuff. The people doing the sweep often steal homeless people's stuff.

If you're reading this there's a good chance that you're housed and somewhat financially stable. If I broke into your house and stole your passport and important documents, your bike, photos of your family, all your valued possessions, relatives' ashes, and more, you'd survive. Replace what you can.👍🏿

Then I do it again next month.😦

@mekkaokereke to be clear, NYC is brutally unkind to our unhoused, though merely slightly less so than SF. When we had a subway mass shooter at large, he was found because the guys at our local plant store saw him at the neighborhood McDonald’s — NYPD was busy a block away tossing every worldly possession owned by a camp of unhoused people.

In the '80s, people used to make jokes that lawyers were evil and lacked moral compass.

In the '90s, finance bros were all perceived to be evil, and shouting "greed is good!" as the world burned.

But now here comes tech, busting through the wall like a cartoon villain Kool-Aid Man, to steal the unnecessary cruelty crown! We're literally making global 10 law firms and megabanks, look like bleeding heart humanitarians in comparison?

      How are we not ashamed?

If your approach to addressing a social issue like homelessness is significantly to the cruelty side of a *checks notes* billionaire, lifelong GOP voting, Goldman Sachs resume having, hedge fund managing, cocaine snorting, cuff link wearing, "PJ to Miami, then Davos takes of in 30 minutes!" saying bro? Then you've failed at basic humanity.🤷🏿♂️

I don't care how many farmers markets you go to, or how your tomatoes are doing this year, or how much you smell of patchouli.

@transitory @waitworry @mekkaokereke The joining of forces between the soulless venture capitalists of the 80s and the soulless techbros of the 90s is becoming literally one of the deadliest combinations that humankind has unleashed into the world.

      @waitworry @mekkaokereke

Meanwhile tech bros see tech as the solution to *everything* and believe rules don't/can't apply to them.

Breaking roles is cool! Radical even! Just a bunch of nerds! Disruptive!

Except it is always breaking the rules that protect people. Leading to an unregulated gig economy that exploits workers and erodes housing.

The tech bro "innovator" /business types really deserve more derision than they get tbh. More than lawyers even.

@mekkaokereke honestly I think a lot of the mentality that lawyers are evil was pushed by big businesses who don't like the idea that there is a mechanism in place to punish them if they break laws

it's died down a lot now but I remember when we were all being pushed the idea of how this country is over litigious and we needed tort reform to curb frivolous lawsuits and then it turned out like the hot coffee lady and other such cases were misrepresented by the press
