     @lilli @kittenlikeasmallcat custom emoji reacts are in the dev branch of pleroma so it will hopefully get merged into a release soon. with all the problems I've seen people have with akkoma I'm a lot less willing to consider moving us over to it (unfortunate considering the ako/akko AQs)

AQ is honestly closest to simple gematria (i.e. A = 1, Z = 26), except AQ actually includes the numerals within the cipher, such that 0 = 0, 1 = 1, 9 = 9, A = 10, Z = 36. in that sense it corresponds with the assignment of letters to numbers in higher bases, and is sort of weird among gematrias for making both numerals and letters its objects, rather than specifically letters
     
     this is actually the really salient reason for the name AQ, and the reason the acronym AQ is usually preferred over anything it's supposed to stand for. A = AQ 10, for the ten numerals. Q = AQ 26, for the 26 letters. 10 + 26 = 36, the 36 glyphs of AQ, which then map onto the numogram
