She originally got hired by Hololive as a "vsinger" and not a "vtuber". But after a while they realized that people like Irys more as a streamer than as just a singer so they retroactively made her part of Hololive Council and she's just a regular vtuber now while whatever Mori is doing is more like a vsinger.Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this. -

SuperDicq (superdicq@minidisc.tokyo)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 22:44:08 JST SuperDicq @EricZhang456@pl.starnix.network @kirby@lab.nyanide.com I do get the "VTuber music" genre.
All the Hololive vtubers are sort of mean to be idols. So they sing and they often have fun and catchy songs that fit their personality and theme. The songs are just meant to promote the characters, the streams and the vtuber's personal brand.
I think a lot of it is really fun but obviously you shouldn't look at it from a music critic perspective. That's just not the point of cute anime girls doing cute things.
Mori Calliope however has become widely different from all the other Hololive girls since her contract with EMI Records. Beacuse of that her music post 2022 no longer serves the purpose of promoting her as a vtuber like her colleagues, her music actually serves to sell albums.
At this point I'd argue she streams to promote her music and doesn't make music to promote her streams. Fully opposite. -

Eric Zhang (ericzhang456@pl.starnix.network)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 22:44:09 JST Eric Zhang @SuperDicq @kirby You know what, I don't get this entire "VTuber music" genre, a lot of the things are just really bland, boring and overproduced. Also apparently Mori Calliope doesn't even write or produce any of her music so there's that. But hey, that's just my opinion. -

However nowadays she has a contract with motherfucking EMI records(!) and an infinite army of talented producers and collab artists standing in line to make shit with her. This isn't regular just your average vtuber music or idol songs anymore, she has legitimately gotten to the point where actual critics will have to listeen to her stuff. -

SuperDicq (superdicq@minidisc.tokyo)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Aug-2023 22:44:20 JST SuperDicq @EricZhang456@pl.starnix.network @kirby@lab.nyanide.com Personally I think all of her new songs are indeed "objectively" better from a production standpoint, I don't like them as much.
I can just hear she no longer writes her own songs anymore, the lyrics that used to be full of meaning have become meaningless.
I personally enjoy the indie "do it yourself" vibe a lot more, speaks more to me and just makes everything more relatable.
I really think that the "Shut Up, Get Happy" EP is the last time we saw that old vibe.Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this.
