It's crazy out here dudes. Feel like more people should be talking about this. There is still no end in sight. Next 7 days of forecast are all fever death temperatures. 105 is a big difference from 100.

Dude next to California, Texas's electric grid and utility is very fucked.
Utilities can charge unlimited money during premium hours without telling anyone until they get the bill.
I've seen a report where someone was charged $10,000 during peak time, on a bad heat wave. -

@alex the next line was “more people should be talking about this”. My point was that they aren’t, and there is little reason for them to, because it isn’t unusual in that area for this time of year.

@eriner I've lived in Texas my whole life. It is often very hot during the summer. But never 105 or above for multiple weeks straight without a break. This is definitely unusual. -

@eriner I was born in 1993. I'm still not even saying this is global warming, but a massive heat wave that only comes every 30 years IS unusual. -

@alex The weather pattern just doesn't seem unusual to me. To cite two examples from Houston, 1997 and 1990 had similar unrelenting heats in the month of August. The only difference from 2023 is that the high is 4-6 degrees warmer. The underlying weather pattern of prolonged heat without break isn't that unusual. I think the fact that it's hanging around triple digits instead of 97-98 is having an outsized effect on the perception.

@alex I think we just differ in our perceptions of time scales when evaluating and determining what is considered "normal" weather in a given area. I will of course concede that prolonged heat waves don't happen often. Just trying to offer a broader perspective over a longer duration. For the two examples I gave, you were -3 and 4, so it wouldn't expect it to be in your living memory.

@alex lol, same, but not because it's hot here, I'm just tired of hearing stories out of corporate media outlets bitching about how hot it is, how we're all gonna die, and how the Texas power grid is shit and moments away from every transformer vaporizing.

@eriner Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Just because the media exaggerates and tells lies, doesn't mean a thing they have once said can never possibly be true.
But the actual surprising thing to me is that during an actual life threatening heat wave the media is silent, and that was the point I was trying to make in the original post. -
