It's a viable retro-gaming platform. Get bent. Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this. -

@scarlet @roboneko @olmitch @newt Mere applications in wayland do not change the display configuration, so in a way yes.
btw there's gamescope (as used on the Steam Deck) if you have a game that doesn't scales by itself. -

Is Wayland any better at handling this? These days if I game below native resolution I just use AMD's FSR to scale it up, so I don't deal with a game changing my resolution anyway. But I am curious if Wayland really is the savior of display servers, or if it's just as stupidly constructed. -

what about running full screen without compositing? -

@roboneko @scarlet @olmitch @newt Oh dear, I sense a DOS-brained gamer™ moment.
- Wayland compositors do compositing on the GPU, so it's not some slow shit like you can experience on X11
- With that said, fullscreen applications can be accelerated even more via GPU planes to get something that's AFAIK virtually undistinguishable from "no compositor/WM" except stuff like alt-tab and multi-monitor will just work -

Oh and it does not have the issue of not switching back to original res if you exit out of a fullscreen game running a different res like X does -

@roboneko @scarlet @dushman @olmitch @newt I think controlling the display entirely to the point of breaking stuff like alt-tab is only for things like VR, where you have DRM leasing for non-desktop displays.
And from what I could see SteamVR works like a VR-aware compositor so when a game freezes the image rendered still moves with the headset. -

@lanodan @scarlet @olmitch @newt cc @dushman nah I'm aware that compositors can perform well enough these days. it was a question about what would happen if an application wanted to take full control of the display. I think I answered my own question tho, looks like you'd use DRM directly (???)
