And as Sun's similar port to Apple also had mouse port on the keyboard I'm guessing it's for like a device that would be both PC and Apple compatible where keyboard&mouse would be needed, an old KVM switch maybe?-

It's still a mystery. Someday, the right person is going to see this post and they'll finally solve this puzzle.
