@mischievoustomato The last decent thinkpads were the core 2 duo line, as those ones can boot without proprietary software.

@raccoon @dushman @methyltheobromine I should get a Thinkpad, specifically the Yoga models with a stylus. All other tablets seem kinda iffy with poor repairability and mobile operating systems, and the Thinkpad has fairly green scores on iFixit and a PC OS. Plus, Lenovo literally sells them with Ubuntu on it, so Linux support seems guaranteed (Unlike my HP laptop unfortunately).

Maybe I'll also try the older Thinkpads as well, particularly the ones with the keyboard people like so much. It's kinda funny that I like rugged designs in general, since even with them being practical first, they still evoke that emotion of coolness. Older Thinkpads also seem usable in the modern day, since a laptop I had that was slower than a Core 2 Duo was running Ubuntu quite well.

@meso @dushman @methyltheobromine @mischievoustomato @poppyart @raccoon I always think that this Framework thing is kind of a gimmick since there's no upgrade I can't do with my HP laptop besides motherboard. If I am replacing the motherboard, I would probably be getting a new laptop anyway.

Also apparently the Framework people don't know that laptop socketed CPUs existed lmao

        Socketable CPUs
Short answer: no Longer answer: The only socketed processors are desktop models and those suck down power like there is no tomorrow. This is an ultra-portable not a desktop replacement so battery life (which hasn’t been fantastic to begin with) would absolutely nosedive. It would also require a complete redesign of the chassis, cooling solution, literally that’s a whole new laptop and would negate the whole point of upgradability thus far. This question has been asked multiple times and you ca...

@meso @poppyart @dushman @raccoon @mischievoustomato @methyltheobromine yes, if you want to upgrade the cpu you need to replace the motherboard, they sell the motherboard though

if you don't count ram upgradability as upgradability a framework laptop is just as upgradable as my macbook

@dushman @meso @raccoon @mischievoustomato @methyltheobromine @poppyart tbh this thing is just as repairable as my hp, i was originally expecting it to have socketed cpu or something (old thinkpads have socketed cpus)

@meso @dushman @raccoon @mischievoustomato @methyltheobromine Huh, maybe I'll consider a Framework and a separate drawing tablet instead. It's just that my current one is too large to carry and it has a fragile screen (I want to draw portably). Of course, it'd also be cool to see a touchscreen Framework laptop (plz let it happen).
