PSA: Mac users should NOT buy Baldur's Gate III yet, as it is still in "Early Access" despite being fully released for Windows.

Steam didn't warn me AT ALL about this, and I ended up playing several hours of the buggy version before realizing that I will lose all my progress once the final game comes out (~Sep 6):

    > Larian previously warned that save files from the game's early access period will not carry over to the game's full release

Then why are they spending millions of dollars developing Proton then? Just as a laugh? Trying to pull one over on us, are they?

To be clear, it's fine that the macOS version is delayed. Sucks but I'd rather wait for a stable version and build my save game off that.

The problem is Steam not giving any indication of this before taking my 90$. Very irresponsible of them. I even read the System Requirements for macOS and there was no mention.

There MUST be a way for them to communicate this to Mac users, and if not, they need to create one. Not that I should be surprised. Steam doesn't care about Mac users and never has.

      @feld @jerclarke

I fail to understand how this is a Steam problem. This is a developper problem not putting it on the front of the store. If you're gonna buy early access, always check what the discussion around it says

Otherwise the Mac version being supported last is because even Linux is overtaking it recently in Steam hardware surveys

@jerclarke @feld yeah, i think both steam and larian could have handled this better, especially because most people who didn't pay constant attention to the prerelease updates probably only found out about this after buying the game.

@lain @feld Also, shouldn't this message also mention that the save games won't work in the final game? If that's still the case, it seems like really important information for anyone starting new saves.

@waltercool @feld @jerclarke i like gog more but steam isn't bad either. it can get very annoying that some games only get updates on steam and not on gog, though.

@lain @feld @jerclarke GOG is pretty nice, but they don't offer some Linux/OSX versions on certain games.

For example, most AAA games with Linux/OSX support on Steam, only have Windows support at GOG... like Bioshock Infinite, or Civ games.

The beta/early release should honestly be a separate "game title" from the final release, so it wouldn't even be possible to buy it for MacOS yet

Can't say I like what they've done with their game store design here

@feld Isn't that for the SteamDeck product that runs Linux?

Either way, what I'm talking about is the way the list their games. You still see the apple logo on games that haven't worked since Catalina released because of the 64bit transition, which makes it really hard to find games to play on a modern Mac.

They clearly aren't willing to build their store to help macOS users find the games that will work.

@lain @waltercool@pl.slash.cl @feld I haven't tried gog before, didn't realize it worked for macOS, maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

Don't love Steam at all, but it's longstanding and I’m "invested" in it at this point, so I shop there out of apathy (and becase games in the actual macOS App Store are always stuck at maximum MSRP forever).

@feld @jerclarke that is the thing, valve doesn't give a single shit about mac, really, from what I know. Sure they entered the market but I guess market is borderline nonexistent, as most """mac gamers""" are probably "hardcore" candy crush players and gotten it from the appstore instead anyway.

The giveaway is the whole apple's "oh yeah you can do VR on macs now...

...but its valve who's actually gonna do it, we don't give a shit" and valve just pretty much deprecating whole thing a year later.

I mean proton, or parts of it, could run on macs, but the thing is that no one gives a shit at this point. Wine works, but for DX11 games you need to translate that shit into Vulkan, and macs ain't support that, sure you can translate Vulkan into Metal and that's possible, but then again who the fuck plays vidya on macs, they either play on windows or just install linux instead, and ones that have macs probably play candy crush and shit instead anyway, the way apple intended. I mean, apple doesn't give a single shit either, it's like, use Metal, bitch, because your other option is OpenGL which on macs at this point has way worse drivers than OpenGL on fucking linux in 2015 because, again, apple doesn't give a shit about games. And now it's deprecated. So if apple doesn't care, why should valve? I mean at the time it was a fun experiment on expanding beyond windows, but linux and foss is more cooperative by design...

At the end of the day, valve cared and still cares about linux because of steamdeck and because it's an escape route from windows prison, an escape route they can shape and influence. MacOS... literally no one gives a shit about it, at least for the purpose of games.
