Watched a few minutes of the automotive Linux talk on #flocktofedora and they mentioned computer controlled brakes...

I for one would rather keep my mechanical/hydraulic brakes. Easy to fix. Don't have to touch a computer. Replace pads, put fluid in, bleed out air > computer bullshit

@miah@hachyderm.io once they started mandating giant monitors for cameras i checked out. looks like the latest i'll ever own is 2007 maybe 2008.

also metal quality, in general, has taken an absolute nose dive ever since. i'm noticing replacement parts are way more fragile than the should be -- and it isn't just cost cutting measures.

@purple I'll accept a minimum of computer for abs, but my brakes do not need Linux. Simple embedded systems that are easily replaced. Do not want kubernetes in my car.

(Reasons my newest car is from 2003)

@miah@hachyderm.io the way ABS works is you do have direct control up until a certain point then the pooter will start opening valves against your will.

on jeeps it's even worse. you can't disable the anti-roll mechanisms, and those apply braking force which will flip you over on mixed surface types.

@purple @miah My wife kept saying she wouldn't consider a car without a huge screen.

Meanwhile, I'm eyeing '80s cars because style has only gone downhill since then.

@tk@bbs.kawa-kun.com @miah@hachyderm.io it isn't the screen i have problems with, it's that they move every control in to it....

@miah@hachyderm.io ok! so! what they dont tell you! is that most manufacturers will lifetime warranty their LED assemblies! it ends up costing you about $40 for GM to swap you out with a refurb -- if you go through the proper channels. but yeah a new module is easily $300+, just like a new headlight for my 07 Accord is $300 despite being incandescent.

what's changed is that we're now reliant on the mfr and not ourselves :( damnit :( i'm sure they find ways to charge you extra to align or sync or whatever BS...

@purple with the introduction of led lights, you no longer replace the bulb. You replace the entire assembly. Cost went from $30 -> $300+ to replace a light.

@purple I watch a lot of auto repair on YouTube and replacement part quality is way down. High chances that the order you receive won't fit, or will fail quickly because of poor engineering.

@purple @miah Switching away from sealed beam headlights was a mistake, pushed to make car makers more money. They don't fog up because of their glass lenses, and are universal.
