  @persagen @saharafang @LALegault I'm currently reading "How to Stand up to a Dictator" by Maria Ressa. She is a Filipino journalist who discovered that algorithmic social media sites were being deliberately used to amplify anger, bigotry and fascism for the purpose of electing hard right political candidates. The Philippines were the test bed, and it then came to us in 2016 and beyond.

  @Tristan @saharafang @LALegault I feel that's exactly what happened in 2016 when Trump was elected. Though that was a result of political operatives / neoconservatives, he opened the floodgates of ignorance, hatred & discrimination.
  Proponents of those ideologies were emboldened, which sickens me. That influence extended to Canada, sadly. 😟
  It's why I track those groups, persons, ideologies - and I'm just getting started. I'm going to build a knowledge graph, that will facilitate that effort.

  @saharafang @LALegault @persagen In part, when people like that practice open bigotry and cruelty, it gives license to those who have been hiding under rocks for fear of what the majority of the community would think of them if they did it. Also, many people worship those with money with the same fervor as religious zealots worship their god. They think that emulation of the obscenely wealthy will somehow grant them a chance to attain similar wealth.

It campaigns for big tech firms to stop providing services to individuals who may promote hate and misinformation, including neo-Nazis and anti-vaccine advocates.
