    Net Zero is a scam

    "Collectively we three authors of this article must have spent more than 80 years thinking about climate change. Why has it taken us so long to speak out about the obvious dangers of the concept of net zero? In our defence, the premise of net zero is deceptively simple – and we admit that it deceived us."

      Climate scientists: concept of net zero is a dangerous trap
      from @JamesGDyke
      Prominent academics, including a former IPCC chair, round on governments worldwide for using the concept of net zero emissions to ‘greenwash’ their lack of commitment to solving global warming.

      @MattMastodon The only thing I can think of is to constantly talk about Degrowth and the need to massively reduce energy consumption, material use and waste production. As you say, we must act now. We need millions of conversations.

      @gerrymcgovern

      Read this article

      From another thread it has been pointed out that many people don't really understand graphs. This was a revelation for me as for whatever reason I usually skip the text and go straight for the graph.

      This graph terrifies me.

      But how do we communicate it? And how de we explain that net zero is greenwash. That planing a few trees doesn't make Taylor Swift's private jet net zero?

      That we need to do everything we can, now.

      @gerrymcgovern Just get people out of their private cars and onto bikes and ebikes - every second climate article has the line "X would have as much climate mitigation effect as getting X million cars off the road" - but they don't seem to make the connection

      @gerrymcgovern The central flaw of Net Zero is that it is a scheme where someone else is making the carbon saving while you continue being a carbon emitter. And Big Oil, with its evil love child Big Car, is not going to commit to carbon negative anytime soon.

      @gerrymcgovern @MattMastodon #Degrowth is an interesting concept. Why do we constantly need growth? Why do we need 200,000 airline flights per day? Why do we need to fly our food half way round the world?

      In the last 200 years, we have mined coal, oil and gas to create the world we have today, and created a global temperature rise that will change the climate for a long time.

      We don’t need net-zero, we need carbon negative

      @failedLyndonLaRouchite @johngbell95 @MattMastodon True. And yet we managed to get by for hundreds of thousands of years without such stimuli. All of this "excitement" is quite modern.

      @johngbell95 @gerrymcgovern @MattMastodon

      I think one answer is that humans crave excitement and adventure and new stimuli

      so if we take away the 200,000 flights, we need to replace it with something that fills the need for new things

      There's a joke about roadbuilding, that it speeds up the time to get from A to B... by destroying everything in between.

      I suppose the same applies even more so to flying

      @MattMastodon @econads @gerrymcgovern @failedLyndonLaRouchite to properly #degrowth there needs to be a plan towards cities that are designed around public transport, and rail transportation needs to be expanded.

      I’ve traveled from England to the south of Spain by rail. Sure, it takes a couple of days, but the travel is part of the adventure.

      @gerrymcgovern @failedLyndonLaRouchite @johngbell95 @MattMastodon I think what's modern is that people have the free time to crave excitement. I'd say traditionally what with 16 hours work days, war, disease and the rest of it, one didn't have the time to do anything but work and sleep. Life was quite "exciting" enough for the majority. Boredom is positive.
      Also, I think most people haven't explored everywhere in their immediate surroundings without having to get on a plane.
