   In 2022, aluminum production caused about 3% of the world’s direct industrial C02

   To put that in perspective, the hugely damaging airline industry and energy guzzling data centers both cause about 2% of global emissions each.

   And we’re not even talking of the devastation aluminum mining does to the Amazon and other tropical forests.

     @weaselx86 The larger problem is that we consume far too much material. A lot of aluminium processing occurs in countries like Iceland and Norway where there is lots of "sustainable" electricity. Aluminium is actually seen as part of the "transition". Fossil fuels are used to destroy the Amazon and tropical forests where it is mined. Fossil fuels are used to transport it. And there are 4 billion tons of toxic red mud waste from its processing in dumps all over the world. But it's clean and green

     Aluminum production consumes a lot of electricity. Is the CO2 emission being attributed to aluminum production due to that electricity being generated using fossil fuels? If so, then the problem reduces to the larger problem of the transition to renewable energy.

     Reducing material needs is just important. It's the critical first step to any sort of sustainable future. The energy industry peddles nothing but fake news and propaganda. It's a total lie that everything will be fine if we just transition to electricity. We must step back from the Growth Death Cult.
     We don't have an energy production problem.
     We have an energy consumption problem.

     We consume vastly too many materials and create vastly too much waste. We must radically slow down

     Adding more to this:

     Aluminium is valuable as a component of PV and EVs (which is probably why you brought up the "Green Hoax" thing).

     Heavy industries are an important component, yes, but they are secondary to decarbonizing electricity production and transportation (the largest emitters by far).

     Again, reducing material needs IS important, but declaring the entire thing a hoax because of it is irresponsible.

     @gerrymcgovern this is misleading.

     I'm not arguing against a reduction in our exploitation of natural habitats, but ANY change in our systems necessarily has an impact. The objective has always been switching to technologies that damage LESS (and if we couple that with degrowth, all the better).

     Saying that a transition to renewability is a hoax because it necessitates materials is short sighted. We should strive for a just transition, but let's leave the hyperbole in Twitter, shall we?
