   Yup, it’s like voting for Hadi Awang because PH cracked down on the LGBT community. In the grand schemes of thing, I’d prefer a hypocritical American-led world order to a cynical Chinese-led world order because at least a hypocritical superpower can be held to some kind of principles to a certain degree.

     That book cover aside, cynical and severe practicality does describe the Chinese worldview (and their foreign policy) very well, lol.

     @rakyat @cendawanita @abhijith I remember a sci-fi novel series once that imagined a China-led world. Cynical and severe practicality is a great way to describe it. I think the author describes it as a "peaceful forced rule". I remember very little about it except that boy it sucked to live in that world. Now I wonder if it had a touch of Yellow Peril to it :P
     Have to reread it, I guess.

     @rakyat @cendawanita @abhijith Haha yes. I used to joke with people, when those books about "China a rising danger" came out that the Chinese do not want war because "it's not practical, and it'll affect their prosperity". Although I'm not sure now, but hey, they're still aggressively practical in all the things they do. Machiavellian.

     Yeah the thing is leaders cannot afford to look weak in front of their people. I’ve read somewhere that China didn’t care about Taiwan and Tibet and stuff during periods where the CCP had absolute control, but when they are weaker, hardliners inside/outside the party have more say and they also need to appear strong.

     @rakyat @cendawanita @abhijith it's really simple ... with the West rattling their sabers, Xi has to show that he can stand up for Chinese pride and not be bullied. 100 years of Humiliation and all that. Cannot tahan for more humiliation.
