    They are bulldozing and bombing Nature in Thacker Pass, Nevada, to burn lithium out of the soil with sulfur.

    In the land of the Northern Paiute and Western Shoshone

    “For sixteen million years, stones, wind and water have shaped this place,” Max Wilbert says. “Pronghorn hooves and pygmy rabbits have left footprints. Burrowing owls have protected their nests. Golden eagles have circled above the silent expanse. Lahontan cutthroat trout have flicked in the creeks.”

      When Land I Love Holds Lithium: Max Wilbert on Thacker Pass, Nevada
      from Katie Singer
      After I reviewed IEEE’s recent book about electric vehicles (EVs), I heard about an underground transformer that exploded 50 feet from an LA friend’s house on a Saturday morning, typically a time of low-electricity-demand. I wondered: could charging several EVs cause a transformer to overheat and explode?

      @wa7iut @natureworks We can ban vapes, scooters, heavily restrict large vehicles, move to public transport, cycling. Demand proper recycling.

      Studies show that with right approach we could reduce lithium demand by 90%

      @gerrymcgovern @natureworks

      where else are you going to mine lithium for green energy batteries? These are the choices we have.

      @timo21 @wa7iut @gerrymcgovern or maybe we could consume less?!

      @natureworks @timo21 @wa7iut To me, consuming less is the core underlying action. Designing for reuse, designing more materially simpler products, and with materials that have a recycling value. But we need a radical reduction in consumption.

      @wa7iut @gerrymcgovern @natureworks It would be great to strategically manage the lithium supply, but it is impossible to limit a commodity without creating black markets, smugglers, illegal mines, etc. Then the police show up & no one wants that. We just need a bigger supply. I bet there are some asteroids with minerals that the zillionaires can direct their spaceships towards. 🚀

      @gerrymcgovern @natureworks

      conservation is a good and necessary idea. We’ll still need lithium to meet green energy goals. Each of the circle irrigation systems in this photo of Thacker pass is about half a mile wide. The proposed mine would be 10x10 of those circles in size. It’s the largest lithium deposit in the US. Could supply 25% of world’s Lithium needs for green energy.
