Technology will not solve the climate crisis.
Technology caused the climate crisis.
Technology culture will accelerate the climate crisis.
The "Green" Transition is really the Greed Transition
"Renewable" tech is only partly renewable. It creates massive environmental harm to mine and make and dispose of.
We don't have an energy production problem.
We do have an energy consumption problem.
We must massively reduce our consumption of energy and materials.

@stephan324ppm Rich and wealthy middle class must reduce energy and material use by at least 40%. A cultural transformation is required (walking, cycling, public transport). That must be first policy drive. In that context, wind and solar are less toxic, but only less. Not no technology, less technology, and much less tech culture.

@gerrymcgovern meaning? No switch to wind and solar? Abandon tech? Too much energy is wasted, true!

@lucyweirphd We need social movement. Only community driven movement can create the true impetus for change. We must evangelize and organize at local levels. Only then is there a chance that the political system will respond.

@gerrymcgovern how? Does personal reduction count when data centres are party to or legislated for at government level?

@mfru @MaJ1 @JStatePost Agree 100%. It needs to be controlled and well thought through. I believe the best place for that change to start is at a community level. The community must start the change. The community must become and active force for change. A great example is the Right to Repair movement.

@mfru @gerrymcgovern @JStatePost I agree we need to reduce material consumption, but I fear that folk have not fully thought through all the implications of dumping technology en mass.
I simply would not be alive without MRIs for instance. A technology that digs deep into rare earth materials & uses massive quantities of energy.
Yes we need to reign in the excesses of the last century, but can we not do so in a controlled & considered manner. ? 😊🫶🖖

@MaJ1 @gerrymcgovern @JStatePost i'm not sure that gerry advocated for uncontrolled and unconsidered reduction, so maybe no one is disagreeing with you here?

@MaJ1 @gerrymcgovern @JStatePost
1. Reduce <--- this is the important step
2. Reuse
3. Recycle <--- this is what many people think is importantwe cannot let ourselves become pessimistic, yes, but adopt an optimistic viewpoint on reducing commodity consumption. that needs collective policy though and this is where the current political system fights against our own interests through lobbying and greenwashing.

@gerrymcgovern @JStatePost But our world is wholly based on it, the very tech you use to spread this message is impossible to create without it.
We need to move away from energy fear & come up with better solutions for generating it cleanly!
Yes I agree that current renewable technologies are lacking, but cleaner technologies are under development as we speak.
Yes we need to recycle more , eliminate waste, but we need to move forward not backwards to survive. 🙏🫶🖖

@lucyweirphd Good luck with that, Lucy. These are the sort of efforts that can make a true difference.

@gerrymcgovern doing me best, Gerry! Going to Carlow on Sunday which will be about rewilding but will also talk about energy use and particularly data centres so will read up on your material in preparation.
