     IIRC none or little of the other translations has it and it was eventually retconned or something
     
     It might have been added because the Mewtwo movie was already out in Japan or something

     so pokemon were fighting in gyms and travelling the whole world and not just Nihon?

     @Koropokkur @romin it was later retconned because Pokemon expanded and they have their own world now. Kanto/Johto is supposed to be Japan. Sword/Shield is England, X/Y is France. Black and White is USA? Not sure anymore. Newest entries are Spain

     @coolboymew @Koropokkur @romin Black and White were supposed to be New York with elements of the rest of the US thrown in. XD/Colosseum were in Arizona. Kanto's supposed to be, well, Kanto so basically Tokyo, and Johto the area to the west of Tokyo. Hoenn is Kyushu, I think, and Sinnoh is Hokkaido.
     
     And yeah, Mew was found in the Guyana jungle and that led to the rest of the Pokemon being discovered in Red and Blue, I remember thinking how weird that was when I first played them. It makes a little sense with Kanto being an actual place in real life.

     Birdie Wing had a fake Euro country but real England and Japan (???). They probably didn't want to say that France is overran with gangsters or something to avoid any sort of issues, but it was dumb
     
     But it's clear they eventually retconned that in later gens
