    Yup. We white people love progress but hate change, so we get very good at creating processes that go in circles.

    (Hi from Minneapolis, where we’re “reforming” our police department by trying all the things that already didn’t work, but this time with better Powerpoints.)

      @lipow

      The schools in the NY area are pretty open about this history-- they want to "fix things" in that US Liberal kind of way where they *want* to fix it... but also don't want to change "too much"

      -I think they were annoyed I didn't want to stay, they have trouble holding on to non-white teachers.

      I don't have the energy to fix all that AND teach math.

      Got a lot out of the ideas on art in math-- there are some great mathematicians in that community. Particularly in projective geometry.

      @futurebird @not2b The even bigger issue is the proximity of this philosophy to facism - it is not well-known outside their circles, but it is a fact, and these days that should draw a lot more attention, see, e.g., https://social-ecology.org/wp/2009/01/anthroposophy-and-ecofascism-2/ or https://bildungsgeschichte.de/beitrag/2543/

        Anthroposophy and Ecofascism
        In June, 1910, Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy, began a speaking tour of Norway with a lecture to a large and attentive audience in Oslo.  The lecture series was … Continue reading "Anthroposophy and Ecofascism"

      Boooo.

      This is why I can't deal with any kind of new age stuff.

      Oh? We paint the kindergarden walls pink then use cooler colors for the higher grades? That's neat.

      Oh? It's because the young child is closer to the womb and the adolescent has "moved out into their limbs" uh...got any *studies* about that? No? Hm.

      It's a minor thing, but the lack of concern for supporting these ideas made me leave.

      They might even be right about the colors! We don't know! We should...you know test it!

      @futurebird @Cthululemon There were things I liked about their approach when we were looking for options for our daughter, but their antivax stuff was a red flag for us. This was pre-Covid, and a lot of their students didn't have their shots, in California. There were measles outbreaks.

      Wow. I'm glad you asked. I totally forgot that the activity I do with conic sections in clay came from my Waldorf teaching days.

      Waldorf is a mixed bag and was not for me in the long run-- but, I held on to the physical, crafty, creative approach to teaching math. (the more new-age stuff... eh... I left that behind)

      Part of the teaching philosophy is that kids need to *make* things to understand them. This is true -- and something worth spreading.
