   Is there an account you already follow and you want to follow it more closely? Do you want to make sure you don't miss their posts?

   You can do this on Mastodon's web interface by going to the account's profile page and clicking on the notification bell icon 🔔. When you have notifications switched on, you'll be notified every time the account posts.

   You can also do this on Mastodon apps, but they may have different interfaces, such as a "Notify" button.

     Normally when you follow someone's account, you will see their posts appear in your timeline but there won't be any special notification about it.

     If you switch on notifications, then you'll see their posts as normal but you will also receive a special message telling you they have posted. It uses the same notification system that tells you if someone has replied to you or favourited your post or followed you.

     @feditips I've got a bit of the opposite problem...

     Is there a way to stop **every single post in a thread** from showing up in my timeline?

     I want the top level post to show up, I just don't need to see the entire thread in my main timeline!

     Specifically:
     Someone I follow posts a cool thread.

     Then I refresh my feed, and the very last post of the thread is at the top.

     As I scroll down, I see Every. Single. Child. Post. In. That. Thread.

     Can I just see the top level post **only?**

     Ahhh, I see what you mean, you would like the thread collated into one post rather than taking up your whole Home timeline?

     Unfortunately this isn't possible (yet). It has been brought up before on the Mastodon github, in this issue:

     https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/8615

     If you're comfortable using github, you can vote for this feature by giving a thumbs up to the first post in the issue.

     If someone I follow posts a thread, I want to see only the *first* post in that thread on my timeline, but not the rest. If the first post catches my interest, I'll click through to view the whole thread.

     My problem is that when someone posts a large thread, it completely overwhelms my timeline. See the example below:

     Are there no other workarounds in the meantime? Seems like that GitHub request isn't getting any traction.

     There's no direct workarounds for readers that I know of. I guess third party apps could do something about this if the core Masto team isn't, but I don't know of any third party apps addressing this either.

     On the other hand, there are plenty of workarounds for writers, basically switching to a server that has higher character limits. This allows long threads to be entirely within one post, which means Mastodon would display them as an excerpt and a "read more" link.

     If someone consistently does really long threads, you might want to let them know you enjoy the threads but are having trouble with timelines being swallowed up by them.

     There are other servers with higher character limits, other platforms like @writefreely which are specifically for long form posts, and if they have a wordpress-powered blog they could use a plugin so that it can be followed from Mastodon etc (more info: https://fedi.tips/wordpress-turning-your-blog-into-a-fediverse-server/).
